The Mandalika International Circuit has undergone significant modifications to proudly host its first-ever major international car racing event, the GT World Challenge Asia 2025, taking place from May 9th to 11th, 2025. This landmark occasion marks a new chapter for the circuit, initially designed primarily for MotoGP, showcasing its versatility and readiness for top-tier four-wheeled motorsport.
To meet the stringent safety and technical standards of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), the Mandalika Circuit underwent a series of crucial modifications. These included adjustments to the run-off areas at several strategic corners, with asphalt removal and the addition of gravel traps being key changes. These modifications were essential to achieve FIA Grade 3 homologation, a certification confirming the circuit’s suitability for hosting international car races such as GT3.
The process of obtaining FIA Grade 3 homologation involved rigorous inspections and evaluations conducted by FIA officials in collaboration with the Indonesian Motor Association (IMI). These assessments ensured that all aspects of the circuit, from track layout and safety barriers to medical facilities, met the required international standards. Achieving this FIA certification without compromising the existing FIM Grade A homologation for MotoGP events is a significant achievement for the Mandalika Circuit.
The hosting of the GT World Challenge Asia 2025 is expected to have a substantial positive impact on the local economy through sports tourism. The event brings together 34 cars from various countries, attracting international attention and motorsport enthusiasts to the Mandalika Special Economic Zone.
This further solidifies Mandalika‘s position as a rising star in the global motorsports scene and demonstrates Indonesia’s capability to host world-class racing events for both motorcycles and cars. The successful modification and hosting of this event pave the way for more international car racing events at the Mandalika Circuit in the future, boosting its reputation and contributing to the region’s growth.
